Crown Agents Zimbabwe’s Efforts Boost Immunization Coverage in Rural Areas

Crown Agents Zimbabwe (CAZim), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) and funded by Gavi, is making significant strides in improving immunization coverage in Zimbabwe’s underserved districts.

Through the Results-Based Financing (RBF) for Immunization Demand Promotion project, CAZim is working to enhance vaccine uptake, focusing on zero-dose children and communities with vaccine hesitancy.

The initiative, launched in 2021, is part of Zimbabwe’s commitment to the global Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) and aligns with Gavi’s Vision 5.0, which seeks to ensure equitable immunization access by 2030. The project operates in 20 low EPI performing districts across the country, with a focus on demand promotion.

Community Engagement and Sensitization

At the heart of the project is robust community engagement. CAZim employs a variety of outreach methods to ensure that local populations understand the importance of vaccination. Community sensitizations have been conducted at various public gatherings, including rallies, dip tanks, and outpatient clinics. Additionally, local leaders such as kraal heads, health center committees, and gatekeepers play a crucial role in promoting vaccination within their communities.

To further drive the message, CAZim utilizes interactive methods such as drama groups, storytelling, and quiz sessions, making immunization information accessible and memorable. These efforts are complemented by community-based follow-ups from Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs), who track vaccine defaulters and refer them for immunization, boosting herd immunity.

Impressive Results in Vaccination Coverage

The project has already shown positive results. Data from the first half of 2024 reveals that 18 out of the 20 targeted districts surpassed the baseline DTP3 coverage data. Specifically, 90% of these districts achieved an increase in coverage by robust community engagement.

DTP3 vaccination coverage also exceeded district targets in 18 districts, reaching over 80% coverage, a clear indication of the project’s success in promoting vaccination uptake. Similarly, the MR2 (measles) vaccination coverage in 16 districts surpassed the baseline, and 14 districts exceeded district targets, demonstrating the effectiveness of community engagement and outreach.

Challenges and Continued Efforts

While the project has made substantial progress, challenges remain. Some districts face difficulties due to high mobility in artisanal mining communities and cross-border activities, which complicate vaccination efforts Nevertheless, CAZim in collaboration with the ministry and other partners is committed to addressing these issues  to ensure no child is left behind in vaccination campaigns.

Moving Forward

The success of the Results-Based Financing for Immunization Demand Promotion project signals a positive step forward for Zimbabwe’s health sector. By increasing vaccination coverage and empowering communities, CAZim is not only helping to reduce the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases but also contributing to the country’s broader health and development goals.

As the project progresses, MoHCC, CAZim and other EPI partners remain focused on creating demand  to ensure reduction of morbidity and mortality from VPDs.
