Our Role in Averting Humanitarian Crises

Crown Agents Zimbabwe (CAZim) plays a crucial role in providing immediate assistance during humanitarian crises. We develop and implement sustainable programs designed to mitigate the impact of emergencies, support recovery efforts, and build resilience in affected communities. Our interventions are not only responsive but are also built for long-term sustainability, transitioning to local governments and communities once the project lifecycle is complete.

We focus on delivering life-saving support in some of the most challenging environments, ensuring that the needs of vulnerable populations are met in a timely and effective manner.

Our Approach to Humanitarian Interventions

Our approach to humanitarian interventions is holistic and designed for long-term impact:

  • Immediate Action: We act quickly to respond to humanitarian needs, whether it’s food insecurity, disease outbreaks, or emergency relief efforts, working closely with local governments and partners.
  • Capacity Building: As part of each intervention, we focus on skills transfer and capacity building of local governments, enabling them to manage and sustain the intervention once the project concludes.
  • Risk Management: We utilize our expertise in fund management and risk management to ensure that all interventions are both cost-effective and resilient, mitigating the risk of failure in volatile conditions.
  • Sustainable Solutions: Our programs are designed with a focus on long-term sustainability. We work to ensure that governments and communities are empowered to manage and continue the impact of our projects well after completion.

Our Impact

Food Assistance During the 2016/17 Lean Season

During the 2016/17 lean season, CAZim facilitated the importation of 55,000 tonnes of maize, providing vital food assistance to over 1.6 million Zimbabweans facing food insecurity. This intervention helped stabilize the food supply and alleviate the suffering of those affected by the crisis.

COVID-19 Response

CAZim played an instrumental role in helping the Government of Zimbabwe and partners during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing critical cold storage for vaccines. This enabled the government to maintain a cold chain for vaccination, ensuring the safe and efficient distribution of vaccines to achieve herd immunity.

Supporting Small-Scale Farmers Through Input Voucher Schemes

Through the DFID/FCDO-funded Protracted Relief Programme, CAZim developed manual and electronic voucher systems to deliver agricultural inputs to over 200,000 small-scale farmers. The initiative supported rural agro-dealers, improved input access, and introduced Zimbabwe’s first electronic agriculture input voucher system in collaboration with Seedco, Windmill, ZFC, and other key sector partners.
